Psychiatry or Therapy?

Psychiatry or Therapy?

posted on May 28, 2024

What is the difference between psychiatry and therapy?

Psychiatry treats mental and physical symptoms related to mental health, behavioral, and emotional conditions with medications or other interventions such as electroconvulsive therapy to relieve your symptoms or eliminating them while in treatment.

Therapy treats mental health conditions, stressful life situations, behavior issues and emotional problems by using psychological techniques that change the way you think and problem solve; relieving or completely eliminating your symptoms.

What are the benefits of psychiatry?

  • Prescribe medications
  • Provide care for mental illness
  • Help you manage short-term or long-term mental health issues
  • Refer you to other health professionals, such as a mental health therapist
  • Improving quality of life

What are the benefits of therapy?

  • To learn how to manage unwanted feelings or symptoms
  • To learn how to communicate
  • To learn how to instill healthy boundaries
  • To learn how to deal with a life transition of any kind
  • To get through a crisis
  • To learn how to have healthy relationships
  • And so much more!

Is psychiatry or therapy right for me?

The rule of thumb is if you feel like you need medication and your provider agrees too, you should also seek therapy. A pill is great but it will never teach you how to do life, have healthy relationships, teach you coping skills, how to communicate, increase your self-esteem, have healthy boundaries and the list goes on.

If you feel like you can’t alleviate your symptoms on your own and it is or getting hard to normal day to day life activities, psychiatry is recommended but it really comes down to your personal choice.
